Canadian hotel owner/operators are challenged like never before to recruit and retain an adequate number of workers especially as this applies to the documented shortage of:
- food and beverage workers; and
- housekeepers.
In Canadian society food and beverage and housekeeping jobs represent entry level positions. In times of high employment entry level positions become even more difficult to fill as the marketplace competes for a limited supply of workers. The federal government recognizes this shortage and now allows hotel owner/operators to recruit international hotel workers under a special training program run under the auspice of the Alberta Tourism Education Council (ATEC).
ATEC training programs for food and beverage workers and housekeepers are offered in Manila, Philippines. These programs includes both a class room and on the job training component. Graduates of these programs are suitable for employment in Canada and are processed under a work visa approved by the Canadian Embassy in Manila.
All workers approved to work in Canada make a minimum commitment to work for their sponsoring employer for one year.
